The Fortress of Târgu Mureș – A Walk Through History
In the heart of Târgu Mureș, near the Main Square, stands one of the city’s most defining historical landmarks: the Târgu Mureș Fortress.
During our walk there yesterday, memories, emotions, and history intertwined within me. The massive walls, the quiet courtyard, and the atmosphere of the past left a deep impression on me. It felt as if I had stepped back in time.

Walking through the Târgu Mureș Fortress was a special experience for me. My love, as I stepped with you on the cobblestones, listening to your stories, I felt more and more that the past and the present were merging. Every wall, every arch, every small detail you showed me not only preserves the passing of time but also holds your memories.

Foundation and Early History
The construction of the fortress began in 1492 when Stephen Báthory, the Voivode of Transylvania. Fortified the area around the Franciscan monastery and church to strengthen his power and maintain control over the population.
Later, in the early 17th century, after the city suffered significant destruction, large-scale reconstruction efforts were initiated under the leadership of town judge Tamás Borsos. As a result, the fortress was built with seven bastions, the first of which, the Gate Bastion, was completed in 1613.

Upon entering the fortress gate, the first thing that greeted us was silence, broken only by the echo of our footsteps and the soft whisper of the wind. As we walked through the inner courtyard, I imagined what life must have been like here centuries ago.
The high walls and watchful towers once provided protection. And today, they serve as imprints of history, telling their stories to those who wish to listen.

Then you shared your childhood memories with me – your confirmation, the nervous anticipation as you awaited the question. And the moment when a little boy’s heartbreaking answer stayed with you forever.
As you spoke, my love, I saw the images of the past in your eyes, as if you were reliving those moments again. I felt that this place was not just a historical monument to you, but a piece of your life that you were now sharing with me.

Later Developments
Until 1910, the fortress was surrounded by a moat, which was later filled in due to urban planning changes. Until 1962, its buildings served military purposes, after which they were transformed into museums, and a recreational park was created on the fortress grounds.
Today, the fortress is one of the city’s cultural centers. Hosting exhibitions, events, and always welcoming those who wish to immerse themselves in the history of Târgu Mureș.

Later, as we gazed beyond the fortress walls, old winter memories surfaced. You told me about the times when your father pulled you on a sled through the city, all the way to the fortress.
I could picture the snow-covered streets, the little red snowsuit you wore, and the joyful child gliding through the snow. It felt as if the city still preserved the traces of those moments.
At the end of our walk, as the setting sun cast its golden light on the fortress walls, I felt that I had not only received a fragment of history from you but also a part of you.
Standing there among the ancient stones, I knew that this memory would become another story we now share.
This fortress is no longer just a place to me. With your stories, my love, it has become complete, alive with your memories. And that is what makes it truly special to me.
