Easter Eggs Dyed with Love and Onion Skins
Easter Eggs Dyed with Love and Onion Skins – one of Faye’s, my love’s family Easter traditions
There’s something deeply comforting about dyeing eggs with nothing but onion skins. No fancy colors, no complicated steps — just patience, and a bit of nature.
Faye once told me how her grandmother would head out into their big garden before Easter, searching for the most interesting leaves she could find — parsley, dill, carrot tops, even “weeds” if they looked pretty enough.
She would carefully press those leaves onto eggs, wrap them in onion skin, and dye them in warm, earthy water.
It wasn’t about being perfect.
It was about giving — because she made enough eggs for everyone. Family, neighbors, and of course, the Easter “sprinklers”.
Today, we tried to recreate a little piece of that memory. And even though we only used onion skin, the warmth it brought into the kitchen felt like a whisper from the past.
This video isn’t a tutorial. It’s a little love letter to tradition, to patience, and to those who showed us how beauty lives in the simplest acts.

Ingredients
- 10 Eggs
- Hosiery
- Skin of 5 onion
- Leaves of your choice
- Any kind of fat (lard) or vegetal oil
Instructions
- Place one of flower or leaf over an egg.
- Wrap the hosiery over the egg.
- Pull and tie tightly to hold the flower or leaf in place.
- Repeat this steps with the rest of the eggs.
- In 1 liter of water put the onion skins and the eggs to boil.
- Let it boil for 10 minutes, then set aside for 2 hours.
- After 2 hours remove from pan and hosiery also.
- Spread with a little fat or lard. In this way the eggs became shiny.
Tip: The longer the eggs rest in the onion dye, the deeper their color becomes — from warm amber to rich, earthy red. Like love, it grows stronger with time.
Good Appetite!
